Exercise and Final Rating Procedure
used by the C/C++
courses
A core part of the C++ course is to complete exercises. Exrcisses
targeting the covered topics are made available after each lecture.
The exercises have deadlines, usually two or three weeks after they were made
available. Exercises are rated OK, questionable (1/2 OK) or not OK.
Exercises rated below their maximum possible ratings may (before their
deadlines) be resubmitted once. Never resubmit exercises already rated OK.
Exercises come in two flavors: basic and advanced. Usually there are five
basic and three advanced exercises.
Rating procedure
Once you've accumulated the equivalent of three OK ratings for the basic
exercises (e.g., 2 OK ratings and 2 questionable ratings sum to 3 OK ratings),
your percentage for that set becomes 60%. Additionally completed basic
exercises are used to increase that percentage to at most 70%.
When there are 5 basic exercises, then the percentage for
the basic exercises score x is
- if your score is between 3 and 5: 10 * (6 + (x - 3) / (5 - 3)) %
- if your score is at most 3: 10 * 2 * x %
Each OK-rated advanced exercise increases the set's percentage by 20%. So, by
completing three basic and two advanced exercises you've reached 100%.
The maximum percentage of a set cannot exceed 100%: receiving OK ratings for 5
basic exercises and 3 advanced exercises still results in a
percentage for that set of 100%.
Rating limits
When you've reached an over-all average percentage exceeding 97% (and have
shown that you thoroughly understand the covered topics at your final talk)
your course grade will be 10.
You receive a course grade 6 if your average percentage is 56%, and have
shown that you well understand the covered topics at your final talk.
Final Results
Completing the course: the Final Talk
To receive a certificate of completion you must have received
sufficent ratings for the exercises and have attended a
final talk.
- If you leave the course after Part I your final results are computed from
your Part I's average exercises percentage and its final talk.
- If you joined the course at Part II your final results are computed from
your Part II's average exercises percentage and its final talk.
- If, after attending Part I you continue with Part II you can skip
Part I's final talk and only do part II's final talk. In that case your
final result is computed by combining the final results of Parts I and II.
- To qualify for a final talk the average rating of the completed part(s)
must at least be 56%. If your average rating is lower than 56% then you
cannot plan a final talk.
- If you also attend Part III then the results of the attended Parts I and
II are combined to the final result. If you completed parts I and III then
the results cannot be combined but are used separately.
- You can make an appointment for a final talk within a month after the
deadline of the last set of exercises.
The final talk is used to fine-tune your average exercises rating. Depending
on your performance the final results may be raised or lowered. Occasionally
the impression received from a final talk is seriously lower than what could
have been expected based on the average exercise ratings. In those cases a
2nd final talk can be scheduled withing three weeks. To receive a
certificate of completion a sufficient final talk is required.
